Why the salary cap is the real opponent

In this challenge the roster is not your problem — the contracts are. A bloated cap sheet does not just cost money; it takes away your tools:

• The tax and the apron. Spend past the luxury tax and the owner pays a penalty on every extra dollar, steeper the longer you repeat it. Cross the apron and you lose roster tools entirely — the league's way of stopping runaway spending.
• Salary matching. Over the cap, any trade has to match salaries within a band. A bad contract is not just expensive — it is hard to move at all, because the other team has to make the money work too.
• No room to sign. With the books full you cannot chase a free agent. Every improvement has to come through a trade or the draft.

How you dig out

Cap management is a puzzle with a real solution. Find the team with cap room — a rebuilder who can absorb a bad contract without matching salary — and pay them an asset to take it off your books. Let dead money expire rather than chasing it. Use the amnesty valve when it is the only way out. And once the sheet is clean, the same cap rules that trapped you become the room you need to add the piece that gets you to fifty wins.
